CHINMAYA INSTITUTE OF HIGHER LEARNING

CHINMAYA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT

Whether at management forums, in private and public companies, or Management institutes, Swami Chinmayananda was frequently invited to give his wisdom in holistic management. The Chinmaya Institute of Management (C.I.M.) that Swamiji envisioned in the1980s stands on the natural nexus between Vedanta and management. For about three years from 1980 in Bangalore, a small team of dedicated workers researched, developed material and conducted seminars at companies. A concrete result was the three-volume set of Vedanta: The Science of Life by K. V. K. Thampuran.

Swami Tejomayananda then revived the C.I.M. in late 1997. The institute is dedicated to offering Management education and training with a holistic perspective that integrates spirituality, values and ethics into management. Located in Bangalore, the CIM has a variety of activities: Executive Development Workshops for corporations and colleges; seminars conducted by world-class faculty; guest lectures; research; and publication of a journal Chinmaya Management Review with Indian and international contributors.

CIM functions under a broader umbrella of the Chinmaya Institute of Higher Learning (CIHL), whose vision is to research and impart knowledge that applies values and Vedantic principles in several areas.

CHINMAYA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (http://www.chinfo.org)

The Chinmaya International Foundation (C.I.F.), an important limb of the Chinmaya Movement, came into being as a registered body with its headquarters in Veliyanad near Cochin on 25th April 1989. Officially inaugurated in February 1990, the Foundation is conceived as an international centre for research and studies in Sanskrit, Vedanta and other indological disciplines. It is a forum of seekers and scholars working together towards a deeper understanding of different world-views so as to discover and disseminate the underlying harmony of universal existence. CIF is geared to function as a bridge between spirituality and science.

The site on which the C.I.F. stands is believed to be the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya. (It is his mother’s home while Kaladi–the well-known town–is his father’s place.) Swamiji said, "Let CIF grow up as a National Institute of Hindu culture gearing up to embrace the entire humanity in love and with great concern for their welfare."

Through research the CIF is expected to serve a large segment of people in the academic field and, true to the vision of Swamiji, it will endeavour to bridge the communication gap between spirituality and science.

In its first decade of existence, the foundation has come a long way. A very good infrastructure with a library of ten thousand books on indological subjects, computer/internet facilities and good accommodation beckons scholars and spiritual seekers alike to come and do research work or sadhana at this site. In the year 2000, the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam recognized the C.I.F. as a research centre. Several research projects are going on e.g. a new translation of Adi Shankara’s commentary on the Brahma-sutras, a study of Sanskrit writings on stones in Kerala etc. The foundation has been offering a home-study course in Sanskrit from 1990. An eminent scholar, Dr. A. R. Iyengar, guides the academics as the foundation’s director. A. Balakrishnan (formerly in Chinmaya family, Kuwait) worked very hard to build this fine facility for ten years. Reputed institutions like the Archeological Society of India and the National Council for Educational Research and Training have found the sprawling campus of the foundation ideal for holding their seminars.

It is a happy coincidence that it was founded in the centenary birth year of Swami Tapovan Maharaj.
