Ashtadhatu Murti

Gurudev's murti is an 'ashtadhatu pratima'. This means that the sculptured form was crafted from a mixture of eight metals - a composition prescribed in the Shilpa-shastras comprised of gold, silver, copper, zinc, tin, iron, lead and antimony. This sacred alloy is considered pure and does not decay.

Swami Chinmayananda attained Mahasamadhi on 3 August 1993 in San Diego, USA. His mortal body was brought for public darshan on 7 August 1993 to the Chinmaya Centre of World Understanding in New Delhi. Thereafter, Gurudev’s body was transported in a vast cavalcade to the ashram in Sidhbari for his final resting place. Devotees from around the world attended the rituals.

The place chosen for Swami Chinmayananda’s bhu-samadhi (interment in the earth) was the rose garden behind his kutir. where he often spent time sitting with devotees. The elegant Kerala-style Samadhi Sthala sits serenely against the backdrop of the majestic Dhauladhar Mountains. Like the mountains, it is a refuge and a destination of profound, undisturbed peace.

The Still Centre

A place to connect with Gurudev in silence

The murti (idol) of Gurudev is seated over the exact spot where his mortal remains were interred with full Vedic rituals. The murti faces east, the same direction in which his physical body was placed, sitting in the lotus position. Just as when he was in residence, Gurudev’s Samadhi Sthala attracts devotees like bees to a flower. Sitting in his silent presence or offering prayers at his murti, the heart and mind are stilled.

Prayers and Worship

Puja is offered in reverence daily

The Samadhi Sthala is a place of powerful silence, prayer and meditation. Every day, 365 days a year, morning and evening, prayers and arti are offered. Elaborate puja is offered on Jayanti Day, Guru Purnima and Aradhana Day.
