Our Journey

Chinmaya Mission activities in Bakersfield began in 1985 with a few families gathering regularly for bhajans and storytelling for children. By 1990, the group had grown to 15 families. That same year, Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda’s visit for a lecture at Cal State University planted the seed for a thriving mission center.

The Chinmaya Mission movement in Bakersfield gained momentum in January 1992 when Swami Tejomayananda first visited for a weekend yagna. At the time, he was the Acharya of Chinmaya Mission San Jose. Over the next year and a half, he made several visits, inspiring many through his discourses and steadily increasing participation. His continued visits every few years played a key role in the growth of the center.

After 1993, Swami Chidananda’s visits supported the center’s growth. That year, Bal Vihar and study groups began, later moving to the Hindu temple in 1997. Today, the mission serves around 100 families and 160 children across Bakersfield and its satellite centers.

Swami Ishwarananda has been the main driving force behind the growth of Chinmaya Mission Bakersfield. During 1996–2001, his regular visits for Jnana Yagnas inspired teachers, adults, and children. His continued guidance has helped the center grow and realize its full potential.

Along with Bal Vihar and study groups, Chinmaya Mission Bakersfield conducts lectures by visiting acharyas, youth camps, retreats, and events like Diwali Mela and Bhajan Sandhya. Regular activities include meditation, Gita chanting, language and yoga classes, along with daily worship of Gokul Krishna by volunteers.

The mission was registered in 2003, with land purchased in 2000. After approvals and resolving challenges, Bhumi Pooja was held in 2005, and the center—Chinmaya Gokul—was inaugurated in 2006 by Swami Tejomayananda. The facility supports various activities, and the mission continues to grow with community support and blessings.
