Tapovan Kuti, Uttarkashi
Experience
Built in 1936 by devotees, the original one-room mud-walled kutia sheltered Swami Tapovan Maharaj until his Mahasamadhi in January 1957
Located on the hillside with a view of the soaring mountains and the rushing gurgling Ganges below
The kutia, now part of a larger ashram, stays as locus of silence, and spiritual depth, preserving the presence of the great renunciant who once lived there.
Inside the kutia Swami Tapovan's cot, kamandalu (Water Pot), and a few texts are prederved, while the verandah, where he gave Vedantic discourses, has been converted into a shrine.
Swami Chinmayananda spent seven years studying under Swami Tapovan,, the place exudes deep stillness and the presence of Gurudev and Parama Guru
Evening aarti to Swami Tapovan, Gurudev, and Ganga Ma is a highlight at the ashram
An ancient temple, said to be established by sage Parshuram.
The small temple houses a powerful 56cm dark granite svayambhu (self-born) lingam, tilted slightly to the right.
Next to the lingam adorned with flowers and leaves, the Devi shrine houses a powerful trident radiating vibrant energy
