From Knowledge to Wisdom

Our founder, Swami Chinmayananda, observed the paradox of rising comforts yet diminishing happiness and intuited the need to share the wisdom of true happiness. With the blessings of his Guru, Swami Tapovan Maharaj, he began the extraordinary task of bringing the knowledge of the Rishis down from the Himalayas to the heart of bustling cities.

His initiative soon blossomed into Chinmaya Mission, a global movement founded in 1953. Committed to uplifting both individuals and society, he made the wisdom of Advaita Vedanta simple, practical and transformative.

Rooted in the Guru-Shishya tradition, Chinmaya Mission guides seekers in their spiritual journey. By sharing the eternal teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, we strive to create a world of peace, happiness and harmony.

Our vision extends to value education, art, culture, leadership, social service and youth empowerment. With over 350 Centres worldwide, Chinmaya Mission provides Vedanta courses, retreats, cultural programmes, academic education and community service.

After Swami Chinmayananda’s Mahasamadhi in 1993, the Mission continued to work as per Gurudev’s vision under the guidance of Swami Tejomayananda. Today, Swami Swaroopananda leads the organisation as its Global Head. The Central Chinmaya Mission Trust (CCMT), based in Mumbai, serves as the governing body, upholding our vision of spiritual upliftment, leadership and service.

Chinmaya Mission Logo: Symbolism & Meaning

This logo reflects Chinmaya Mission’s vision - spreading Vedantic wisdom, facilitating self-discovery and rendering service to humanity.

The lamp represents the ethical life of virtues needed to ignite the flame of inner wisdom, while the swan symbolises the power of discernment: the ability to distinguish truth from illusion.

Just as one lamp kindles many others and retains its own brilliance, one Realised Master brings transformation to countless individuals and remains undiminished. Like light dispels darkness, the universal Reality shines within us, enlivening and illuminating all knowledge as the Divine presence within.

Chinmaya Mission Pledge

In the ninth chapter of the Bhagavad Geeta, Shri Krishna says, “One who makes an inner resolve and takes a firm decision to follow the path of righteousness should be considered a sadhu”.

A pledge is a sankalpa or a vow. It is a decision that helps to bring about an inner transformation. You become a seeker the moment you take a sankalpa or decision. It is this sankalpa shakti which acts as the catalyst that changes an ordinary man into a historic personality.

The Chinmaya Mission Pledge is a direct message to us from Swami Chinmayananda. In an inspired mood, Swamiji spontaneously dictated this pledge at a conference of Chinmaya Mission workers in the summer of 1962 at Ernakulam. He said that this pledge would act as a guide to all Mission members and to people in general. This pledge conveys the very essence of the scriptures and in simple words tells us the goal of life and how to live it. This great Mahatma’s life’s message has been summed up in a few simple sentences or aphorisms in the pledge.

We stand as one family, bound to each other with love and respect.

We serve as an army, courageous and disciplined, ever ready to fight against all low tendencies and false values, within and without us.

We live honestly the noble life of sacrifice and service, producing more than what we consume and giving more than what we take.

We seek the Lord's grace to keep us on the path of virtue, courage, and wisdom.

May thy grace and blessings flow through us to the world around us.

We believe that the service of our country is the service of the Lord of Lords, and devotion to the people is devotion to the supreme Self.

We know our responsibilities. Give us the ability and courage to fulfill them.

Om Tat Sat.
