Shishu Vihar

Shishu Vihar, Chinmaya Mission’s early childhood programme, nurtures children aged 1-5 years. It lays a lasting foundation of spiritual and moral values that will guide them throughout life.

Shishu Vihar was first introduced in Hong Kong through the vision of Swamini Supriyananda, a Psychologist by profession. It has since expanded to Centres worldwide. She notes, “Little ones have a strong retentive power and learn quickly. The added benefit is that parents also absorb the teachings, reinforcing values at home. Even 3-year-olds can chant the Hanuman Chalisa!”

Shishu Vihar is designed to introduce infants and toddlers to spiritual education in a fun, engaging and age-appropriate manner. Classes follow a modern structure of playgroups where babies and toddlers are accompanied by one or both parents. Children are immersed in simple scriptural stories, sing bhajans and nursery rhymes, play games to develop motor skills and engage in arts and crafts that foster social connection in a warm and joyful setting.

Shishu Vihar Impact: Planting the Seeds for a Joyful Life

Spiritual Growth Backed by Psychology

Modern psychology highlights the importance of early childhood as a critical period for cognitive, emotional, and moral development, making it a highly receptive window for spiritual growth. Indian traditions have long echoed this understanding, emphasising the need to instill values from the earliest stages of life. Swami Chinmayananda’s own life reflects this principle as he was raised in a home where sacred chants filled the air, revered saints like Chattambi Swamikal, and others were welcomed with devotion and respect, fostering his spiritual inclinations from a tender age.

Family Bonding

Accompanying parents or guardians take the rhymes and stories home to enjoy reading and singing them with their children and extended family, reinforcing the shared values. Shishu Vihar is all about combining fun and interaction with values and wisdom so that the kids will develop as they grow. It is a wonderful bonding time for the parents and their toddlers.

Testimonials

Heartfelt Experiences

"My grandson, Vedant and I have been attending the Shishu Vihar classes with Charuji for a few months. He loves the bhajans, stories and art & craft. We are so blessed to have these classes at such a young age to sow the seeds of spirituality for our infants and toddlers.” - Mala, Grandmother of Vedant, a Shishu Vihar Attendee, Singapore

Our present work may be great or small. Yet, the important thing is to do it well.
