Service to the Mountain Folk
Gratitude expressed by sharing Vedantic knowledge
In 1979, Swami Chinmayananda conceived of a plan for a Brahmachari course for teaching Vedanta in Hindi, especially in ways accessible to the local villagers and mountain folk. Brahmacharis would also serve Mission centres in Hindi-speaking areas.
This rishi dhan (expression of gratitude to the rishis) was the stimulus for establishing Sandeepany Himachal at Sidhbari. The first course at Sidhbari commenced in 1981 with Swami Tejomayananda, then Brahmachari Vivek, as Acharya.
Centred in Him who is ever in your heart, act honestly with endless love, for the welfare and wellbeing of all others.
Swami Chinmayananda
Living and studying with the teacher in an ashram setting
Vedantic studies at Sandeepany Himachal are undertaken in a gurukula setting. A gurukula is a place where the students and the guru reside together as a loving family enabling the students to learn, not only from the words of their teacher, but also through the teacher's daily living example.
Brahmacharis learn vedic rituals and puja from Chinmaya Mission's chief exponents to maintain traditions in the local communities. Highlights of the course include guest lectures on itihasas such as Ramayan and Bhagavatam by Swami Swaroopananda and Swami Tejomayananda.
