Vision
Swami Chinmayananda conceived the idea of a ‘modern-day Gurukula’ to teach the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta to young men and women who would then take the knowledge back to their community.
“We must have an up to date modern organized institute where children of the technological age could be intelligently introduced to the in-depth significances of ‘life’ itself. This subjective science Vedanta was already with us but in the march of society under the propulsion of history,
we got exiled from our own self-mastery in ourselves and came to roam about in sorrow and dejection, in the forest of shameless sensuality”
His vision was to build a group of full-time, well-educated, trained missionaries, without worldly ambitions or vested interests — brave and courageous — who were willing to leave personal ties and concerns behind, for a life of surrender to the Divine through service to mankind.

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya
Sandeepany Sadhanalaya was founded in 1963 as the first residential academy of Advaita Vedanta, named after Bhagavan Krishna’s Guru – Rishi Sandeepany on 9th January 1963. It came to light under the gloomy, pensive shadow of the 1962 Indo-China war. At the inauguration, Swami Chinmayananda said:
“Our nation is in danger. Much more our national dharma. People lose their solidarity and integration when the web of culture; Dharma, into which they are so inseparably woven, is shattered. If we, as a Nation, are to live, then our National Culture is to be safe-guarded, is to be held aloft, as a beacon to guide and inspire us forever.
We shall train our spiritual soldiers before marching them out to fight the forces of inner disintegration. Sandeepany Sadhanalaya is, therefore, one of the projects of national emergency.”

While the nation mobilised its armies, Swami Chinmayananda mobilized a different kind of a soldier — trained not in arms but in the Upanishads, equipped not with weapons but with wisdom, sent not to the border but to the hearts of the people.
The word ‘Sandeepany’ itself means ‘That which illumines.’ The significance of this name in the words of Swami Chinmayananda:
“This Sadhanalaya,named after the great Rishi Sandeepany(Guru of Lord Krishna), stands for the revival of our glorious culture, a culture that will run as a golden chord, binding us all as one people of divine nobility and spiritual brotherhood.”

The first batch had 30 students in 1963 and it was a six years course. Subsequently the course durations have reduced and presently it is a two years’ course.
Swami Chinmayananda’s disciples became Acharyas of the many successive Vedanta Courses at Ten Sandeepany Sadhanalayas across the world, setting in motion a multiplier effect with hundreds of students graduating over more than sixty years.

What happens after the course?
After the training, willing students are posted to different centres of Chinmaya Mission & they take up service according to their innate temperament.
Hundreds of acharyas of Chinmaya Mission are doing exemplary service of sharing the knowledge of Vedanta in different countries, to different age groups, to different sections of the society in different languages.

Curriculum (Summary)
Swami Chinmayananda envisioned a programme of study for the Vedanta Course, with the twin objectives of developing both the head and the heart of the student.
It is in tune with this objective, that A two-year, intensive Advaita Vedanta curriculum is standardized emphasizing the Prasthana-trayi – the primary triad of the Hindu scriptures.
