Gurukula Life at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Powai

Gurukula Life

Growing through study, devotion, service and satsanga.

Missing {alternativeText}!!!
Gurukula life is not merely about living away from home. It is an opportunity to make the pursuit of Self-knowledge the centre of daily life. In the traditional spirit of the Gurukula, students live simply and sattvically in an ashram, under the guidance of an acharya, with a disciplined routine of scriptural study, Sanskrit, Vedic chanting, meditation, worship, silence and seva.
Head, heart and hands are engaged together: the intellect is sharpened through rigorous study, the heart is refined through devotion and hands are engaged in service. Living, learning and serving together creates an atmosphere of satsanga, discipline, reflection and mutual growth, giving the seeker the space to withdraw from worldly distractions and turn inward towards the discovery of the Self.

Ashram Discipline

Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, as its name states, is an abode of sadhana. Students must follow the Acharya’s instructions and maintain a strict discipline of the Brahmacharya way of life.

The students are called Rishi-putras. Attendance at all classes is mandatory without exception. The environment encourages students to study, reflect and contemplate on the teachings.

Dress Code

Students are required to be attired in white clothes (sari for women and dhoti-kurta for men).

The colour white stands for pure resolve of heart and helps to reinforce a feeling of all around serenity. The purity of white provides a peaceful aura and serves as a reminder to live a life of austerity in thought, word and deed.

Pyjamas for men and salwar-kurta-dupatta for women can be worn during seva, yoga class and in one’s room.

Students are required to bring their own clothing for the first six months of the course. Thereafter, they will be provided.

Yoga & Physical Health

Students will necessarily be seated on the ground during classes/satsangs and during their personal sadhana.

In emergency situations, chairs will be available.

Hence regular exercise is encouraged to maintain physical fitness, especially to sit on the floor & also given the sedentary nature of classes. It is therefore essential that they maintain their physical health.

Yoga sessions, daily walks or exercise in one’s room, is encouraged as times permits.
