Geeta Chanting

The Bhagavad Geeta was very dear to Our Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. He was considered a Foot Soldier of the Geeta. In his own words he says, “The ideal given to children in their early childhood alone can again and again inspire them in their future years of life and supply them with the courage to face their problems, the guts to pursue their purposes diligently, faith in themselves and in their country, and the heroism to live and act according to their own convictions.”

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda also reiterates the importance of learning to chant the Geeta. Verse composed by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda,

गीतापाठेऽर्थजिज्ञासा ततो ज्ञानं भविष्यति।
कृतार्थता हि ज्ञानेन तस्माद् गीतां पठेन्नरः॥

From the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita arises the desire to know its meaning. Thence arises the Knowledge (of the Self). From this Knowledge arises fulfillment. Hence an individual must recite the Bhagavad Gita. The study of the Gita is the key to opening the vast treasure of God’s love for us. It starts with chanting, then study, and over time, assimilating (embracing) that same love wholeheartedly and completely. Gita Chanting allows one to begin this journey here and now, and opening themselves to the embrace of the infinite love.
Bhagavad Geeta Chanting classes are conducted at Bala Vihar every week which is open to children as well as adults. Each Year children in Bala Vihars all across the world learn to chant one assigned chapter. This culminates with the Geeta Chanting Yajna at the end of the year with comprising of Geeta Chanting Yajna Regionals and State Level Competitions. In New York the Regional Chanting Competitions are held in Long Island and the finalists from regionals participate at the Tri-State Geeta Chanting Competition held at Vrindavan New Jersey every year.

Geeta Chanting

Our Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda worked tirelessly for 40 years to propagate the message of the Bhagavad Geeta. Pujya Gurudev said that the Bhagavad Geeta is the “handbook for everyday living”. In order to bring this philosophy into children’s lives, the Bhagavad Geeta Chanting competition was created.

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda explains the grand vision behind this project as “Chant – Study – Know- Live. Chanting introduces one to such a noble text. This kindles the curiosity to know more about the meaning and the contents. This in turn, leads to study. The knowledge gained thereby is translated into actions and thus becomes a way of life.”
This year we will be learning Bhagavad Gītā Chapter 4 – jñānakarmasannyāsayoga. In this chapter, Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna the attributes of one who has realized the supreme knowledge of Brahmavidya and how through various paths of selfless actions, one can get a glimpse of this knowledge.
In the theme verse that is very familiar to all of us, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that Brahman is the substratum of all actions, all the instruments used to perform actions, all the wealth that one has gained through one’s actions, all the actors, and verily the goal sought after through selfless actions. Such actions, performed under the guidance of a spiritual Guru, will cleanse one of his worldly sins and attain oneness with the Brahman.

This is a profound message to be pondered upon! Let us strive to remember this nature of Brahman in every waking moment that we act in this world!

With Lord Krishna’s Grace & Gurudev’s Blessings Annual CMNY Regionals Geeta Chanting Yagna was successfully conducted on April 23rd, 2022. The Yagna was inaugurated by our Brni. Shubhani Chaitanya. We had 35 participants including young children, teens and adults.

This year the participants learned and chanted verses 39-72 of chapter 2 Sankhya Yoga .They were judged on their Memory, Pronunciation & Presentation. We are extremely thankful to our judges Smt. Anjana Suresh, Shri Chandrashekar Vellur, Smt. Mala Venkateshwaran , Shri Srinivas Mahankali & Smt. Sudha Potti for their valuable time & service.
The Main purpose of conducting this competition is that children and adults learn the Geeta with their best effort, dedication and offer their learning in true Yagna spirit to the lord on the day of the competition. It’s extremely gratifying to see young children, teens and adults learn to chant the Geeta. Please encourage children to keep learning the Geeta.

Our Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda viewed the Geeta as a guide and said, “the wisdom and ideals of the Geeta instilled in children from their early childhood inspires and guides them in their future”. Pujya Swami Tejomayananda says, “From the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita arises the desire to know its meaning. Thence arises the Knowledge (of the Self). From this Knowledge arises fulfillment.
