Giant Leap into Limitlessness

30th April 2025

Mother Sita, Adi Para Shakti Herself, blessed Hanumanji by making him the giver, of these siddhis – nau nidhi ke dätä – the giver of all treasures. Therefore, Lord Hanuman can bestow all that we require in life to achieve our goals. Just by remembering him, we can get the needed inspiration to invoke amazing abilities and achieve anything, material or spiritual, and like Shri Hanuman, make giant leaps in our lives.

Take the Giant Leap

A giant leap that Hanumanji took was during the mighty battle between Indrajit and Lakshmana, the epitome of vairägya. Finally, Indrajit fired a massive missile on Lakshmana who fell, almost dead, in a coma-like state. Since neither Indrajit nor the other räkñasas could lift Lakshmana, the incarnation of Sheshanag, they left him for dead on the battlefield and returned to Lanka.

Hanuman arrived, lifted Lakshmana and took him to the Lord. Seeing Lakshmanaji thus, the monkeys lost all hope and confidence. At this crucial juncture, Vibhishana mentioned Sushena, the knowledgeable vaidya of Lanka.

This was wartime. Everyone gathered and lamented the impossibility of getting the physician. It truly was a formidable task, but Hanumanji did not sit there. He took a leap and swiftly lifted the entire house and dispensary of Sushena and carried them to Sri Rama.

At first, the vaidya was reluctant to treat Lakshmana, but eventually, agreed. However, the remedy was a specific herb that grew on a particular range of the Himalayas, and it had to be brought before dawn! This seemed impossible to achieve in such a short span of time.

Hanumanji simply went to Sushena, noted all the requisite details of the location, took the giant leap yet again and went to the Himalayas without the aid of a GPS! Unsure of picking the right herb, in the right quantity, at the right stage of its development, he cut off the top of the mountain and carried it in toto to Sushena, who extracted the juice from the herb, administered it to Lakshmana, and brought him back to life.

The Ultimate Gift

Shri Rama wondered what He could give as a reward as He felt remained forever indebted to Hanumanji. Rather than giving him anything, Bhagavan gave Himself. He enfolded Hanumanji in His embrace.

What a wonderful, soul-stirring scene! The Lord and the devotee were in each other’s arms. Shri Rama was bathing Hanumanji with tears of affection, joy and love, and Hanumanji, with tears of devotion, was doing Bhagavan’s abhiñeka.

Symbolism

In life also, the final leap to the beyond is possible only when the vairägya in us is strong. When vairägya and desire come face to face and battle each other, sometimes, due to a moment of carelessness or the strong onslaught of lust, the vairägya in us goes into a coma. When vairägya is weak, even knowledge becomes ineffective. How can we revive it?

It is then that Hanumanji, steadfast in mastery over the senses, was able to reach that unshakeable mountain of faith, çraddhä, that has Sanjivani, the life-giving herb. Goswami Tulasidas points out that Sanjivani is symbolic of bhakti, devotion; and that alone has çakti, power. Bhakti alone has the strength to remove our äsakti, our attachments and desires, and revive the vairägya in us.

Just as Pujya Gurudev brought River Ganga, the river of devotion and knowledge, Hanumanji brings us Sanjivani, this herb of devotion, to reinspire us whenever our inspiration declines. Therefore, to ensure that our vairägya is strong and our knowledge is assertive, we must constantly engage in satsaìga and keep devotion blossoming in our hearts.

Achieve the Impossible!

When Sri Rana was leaving for His abode, He took everyone who wanted to go with Him. But Hanumanji remained back on Earth, saying, “Wherever Your devotees sing Your glory, O Bhagavan, I want to be there.” And so, Hanumanji remains ever with us.

Therefore, emulate this wonderful devotee of the Lord. Hanumanji, the son of Vayu, the remover of adversities, is ever with us to enable us to take giant leaps into limitlessness!
