The School of Kalayoga, the Music Department of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth (CVV), has expanded to Pune city to make its unique blend of Gurukula and University-style learning accessible to more students.
While the Chinmaya Naada Bindu Gurukula Campus at Kolwan, Mulshi continues to offer a serene environment for disciplined study, Pune, India’s hub of classical music, provides greater opportunities for networking and growth.
Since CVV’s inception, the Kolwan campus has nurtured many budding artists through its double-layered teaching method. The Acharyas build strong foundations, while Gurus guide students with experiential insights to help them become performing artists.
To extend this model, the school now operates from 'Chinmayam', a bungalow situated at Lane No. 8, Veerbhadra Nagar, Baner, Pune – 411045, graciously leased by long-time devotees Shri Vishwanath Anand and Smt. Nisha Anand.
From July 2026, B.A. programmes will be reintroduced, alongside ongoing M.A. and Ph.D. programmes.
Following the Vaastu Puja performed by Swami Shardananda on 1 March, the formal inauguration was held on 6 March 2026, graced by Swami Swaroopananda (Chancellor, CVV), Prof. Manoj Arora (Vice Chancellor, CVV), and Dr. P. Rajendran (Registrar, CVV).
The ceremony, which began with lamp lighting, ghanapaath of Ganesh Mantra by the students of the School of Kalayoga, and felicitations, was followed by talks by:
Smt. Pramodini Rao (Director, CNBG) who narrated how Chinmayam became the chosen venue, emphasizing the continuity of CNBG’s vision in the new setting and the importance of taking music closer to the cultural heart of Pune.
Dr. Atul Kamble (Head of School) presented an overview of Kalayoga, highlighting how the school integrated rigorous academics with the Guru-Shishya tradition to create holistic musicians. He stressed that this was the one and only institute in the country offering such a unique blend of Gurukula and University education.
Vid. (Guru) Manjusha Patil stressed the Guru-Shishya Parampara, reminding students that true artistry blossomed when humility met discipline. She spoke of how the Guru not only imparts knowledge but also shaped the students’ characters, and closed with a soulful rendition of a bhajan by Swami Tejomayananda.
Prof. Manoj Arora emphasized that the programmes at CVV were different as well as unique, as ancient Indian tradition was being blended with contemporary knowledge, and good results are expected to emerge from this blend. Here, he said, we have the Professors and Professors of Practice coming together to create future musicians who would be able to serve the country and the world with high-class music, with the pioneering work done by CVV.
Swami Swaroopananda congratulated the team and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Anand family for their graciousness. Recalling Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda's words on the elevating power of music, he quoted: The greatest musician is he who makes you experience the silence that lies as the substratum to all sound. He emphasized that a Guru’s guidance was often the spark that ignited lifelong creativity, citing the example of Swami Tejomayananda’s first composition Matrustavanam, which was inspired by Gurudev’s encouragement. He also remarked that Chinmayam was not just a bungalow, but a sacred space built with the grace of God and Gurudev long ago, now manifesting its true purpose as a Centre for music and spiritual learning. He wished the Centre, its faculty and students the very best, and concluded by blessing it to flourish and nurture future generations of artists.
The event was smoothly anchored, and concluded with a vote of thanks, by Dr. Swapnil Chaphekar (Associate Professor). Members of the Press, who made notes of the proceedings, and several CNBG well-wishers attended the event and blessed the project. The evening wound up with tea and snacks, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the School of Kalayoga in Pune.
