Chinmaya Mission Hospital

In 1960 a small but ardent group of devotees hired a room in a slum area in Murphy Town, Bangalore. A bi-weekly clinic was run. This was the humble beginning of today's 200-bed Chinmaya Mission Hospital (C.M.H.). When Swami Chinmayananda heard about the work done by the devotees (to mention a few names: Dr. Sushila Purushottam, Kamala Reddy, Mrs. Prafulla Iyengar, Mrs. Dassanachar, Mrs. Yogam), he was very happy and surprised. He gave them a cheque for Rs.500/-.

He said, "Why not! This gives me an idea of starting a hospital." This is how the seed for the C. M. H. was sown. Land was obtained, funds gathered, construction commenced and Swamiji consecrated the hospital in 1970. The bed strength was increased to 50 in 1979 and the pediatric ward commissioned with additional 13 beds in 1981. As the years rolled by and the need for more beds was felt, the facility expanded to a 100-bed hospital in 1993. While wondering how the funds came in for expansion, one can only recall Swamiji's words: "...and an organization needs funds and workers. Chinmaya Mission has got workers but we are always in want of funds. But our faith in the goodness of our programmes is so powerful that we have never hesitated in launching programmes.........Jagadeeswara always drove His messengers to reach us with the required funds at the most appropriate time. This has been our experience in the last 40 years. " On 6 November 1999, the C.M.H. was declared open as a 200-bed hospital with the most modern equipment and facilities. The objective of the hospital is, "Immediate Humane Patient Care at Affordable Cost."

The hospital has a 24-hours emergency department, a twin operation theatre, an intensive care unit, and an outpatient department that offers cardiology, dentistry, ENT, gynecology, neonatology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, paediatric, pathology, physiotherapy and general medicine service. In order that underprivileged patients are also able to avail of the hospital's facilities, a considerable proportion of the services is provided either free or at very affordable cost.

The hospital also provides free immunization to many infants every week. The hospital has also established a community centre in Hoodi village that offers health services combined with welfare activities, childcare and education to the poor people of the community.
