Understanding Marriage Retreat

Chinmaya Mission Orlando hosted a retreat titled Understanding Marriage – The Joy of Harmony. This unique retreat consisted of discourses, dialog and discussions centered around marriage and based upon Vedantic principles and wisdom. A key theme of this year’s retreat was Chapter 9 of the Bhagavad Geeta. Shailajaji, Vilasiniji and Vivekji spoke on various aspects of the marriage relationship and how spouses should work for the spiritual upliftment of each other.

It wasn’t all talking though; participants were able to relax and unwind by joining in some fun activities like bonfire, scavenger hunt, canoeing, outdoor sports and games etc. Childcare facility was provided during the camp so that couples could participate freely in the retreat activities without worrying about the wellbeing of their children. The kids got a chance to engage in their own fun activities like painting, origami, robotics, cricket and soccer. They also learnt some Vedic and Geeta chanting and got a chance to show off some of those skills in front of the general assembly on the last day of the camp.

The final day of the retreat (March 27) coincided with our Holi celebrations and many of the out-of-town retreat participants enjoyed frolicking with colors along with the Orlando Chinmaya family.

Hanuman Mastakabhishekam and Yagna by Pujya Guruji at Noida

Mini ‘Chinmaya Kumbh Mela’ is an apt description of the scenario at the Mission’s Noida ashram on Hanuman Jayanti. This mega event was a confluence of several occasions of celebration – to commemorate the Birth Centenary of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji a Mastabhishekam with 1008 kalashas of the presiding deity Lord Hanuman and a Jnana Yagna by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayanandaji on Sundar Kand of the Ram Charit Manas.

About 30 acharyas of the NCR region, and many of the North Zone and other centres of India as well as devotees from various parts of the world joined Sw. Chidrupanandaji, Acharya and the devotees of Noida for the auspicious event.

The festivities from 17th to 22nd April started with elaborate Kalasha puja in the mornings followed by havan invoking and inviting the Gods to bless. A team of 12 pundits and ritwiks performed the rituals with Vedic chants. Several devotees participated as yajamans. On the 21st all the devotees assembled to unanimously chant the Hanuman Chalisa for 27 times continuously in the spirit of seeking the Lord’s consent to perform the Abhishek and invoke His blessings.

And the grand finale was on the 22nd April, the Hanuman Jayanti. Early morning Pujya Guruji performed arati of the kalashas which were arranged traditionally on a floral design with a small pyramid in the centre. There were Gold Kalashas at the top followed by silver, copper and brass below. These were filled with sacred waters of the 7 important rivers of India. Amidst blowing of conches, bells and chants of ‘Om Shri Ram Dutaaya Namah’ Guruji, adorned with a turban, carried the gold kalasha on his head and walked up the ramp to perform the first abhisheka of Hanumanji with the sacred waters and panchamrita. And after that Swami Nikhilanandaji, Swami Chidrupanandaji and other acharyas performed the abhisheka with gold kalashas. Among the dignitaries Shri Ram Madhav, National Secretary (BJP), Shri Ramana Guruji of Balusupadi village, Vijayawada and Gen. Bhargava, Vice Chancellor of Amity University were the first ones to perform the abhisheka with gold kalashas.

The jubiliant devotees, the kalasha yajmans, from little children to the 80+ ‘young citizens’ then lined up and performed a continuous abhishek by turn. Apart from this all the people who came for darshan were also allowed to offer abhishek and return the kalashas. Around 1500 people worshipped this Lord of strength and wisdom. This programme concluded with the last two kalasha abbhisheka by Swami Chidrupanandaji. Hanumanji was then worshipped with the offering of several garlands – Vada, lemon, betel leaves and flowers followed by a Sahasranama Archana and Maha Arati.

A bhandara (lunch feast) was offered to all the participants as well as the public at large in the neighbouring Gurudwara Guru Nanak Mission premises. This mammoth event could not have been accomplished without the whole hearted support of the adjoining institutions – the Committees of the Gurudwara, Manyavatan, an old age home, Saraswati Devi Mandir School, Amar Public School and the Sanatan Dharma Mandir. The staff and students of all these organisations participated in the programmes. And the co-operation and participation of the neighbourhood residents was commendable. The Noida Medicare Centre and Red Cross, Delhi stood by to aid. The city Police, Fire, Law, and Administration departments readily gave the permissions to hold the event.

In the evenings from 17th to 20th April Guruji gave discourses on the the Sundar Kand of the Ram Charit Manas. His eloquent discourses and melodious chanting of chopais enthralled the 800+ audience seated in the auditorium of the Apeejay School Noida. The Mission devotees were enrapt in the nectarine wisdom of his talks that they had expected. And to the first-time listeners it was a totally new dimension to the topic – both in the way it was analysed and also sung! Smt. Sushma Paul Berlia the President of Apeejay Education Society which also provided the venue for talks gratis inaugurated the yagna. Sw. Nikhilanandaji, Regional Head NCR, addressed the gathering on the occasion. A souvenir – ‘Sankatmochak and More’ was released by Guruji. His humility and loving nature endeared him to one and all through the personal interactions during bhikshas informal satsangs.

By the grace of God and blessings of Pujya Gurudev both the events met with stupendous success. It was possible only due to the detailed planning and effective execution ensured by the guidance and leadership of Swami Chidrupanandaji, lovingly addressed as ‘Captain’ and ‘Man of the Match’ by Pujya Guruji. Each and every Mission member of Noida was so involved in the events that it was not just the ‘hands’ but ‘hearts at work.’

The Glory of Bhakta Hanuman

hanumanIn this world, it is almost impossible for an individual to lead a perfect, blemish-free life – a life that is above criticism. Studying the great epic, Ramayana, we find that even Lord Rama, an incarnation of dharma and righteousness, and the divine Mother Sita, the very personification devotion and purity, were not spared. They were, and still are, unfairly blamed and criticised.

However, there is one character in the Ramayana whose actions are beyond reproach – Sri Hanuman, one of the greatest devotees of the Lord. We do not find a single incident wherein Lord Hanuman has committed any mistake or incurred blame and censure. He is the very embodiment of devotion, wisdom and service. This noble son of Vayu Devata (Wind God) has innumerable virtues. In the Sundarakanda of Tulsi Ramayana, Goswami Tulsidasa sings the glories of this exceptional devotee:

atulitabaladhamam hemasailabhadeham

danujavanakrs- anum jnaninam agraganyam,

sakala gunanidhanam vanaramadhisam

raghupatipriya bhaktam vatajatam namami.

The first thing that attracts us is Sri Hanuman’s immeasurable and incomparable physical strength coupled with great splendour (tejas). This brilliance is like a golden mountain. He possesses the rare quality of using his strength, not to scare ordinary or weak people, but to destroy those who afflict saintly persons. In addition to his physical prowess, Sri Hanuman is an embodiment of knowledge, foremost among the wise (jnani) and a repository of good and noble qualities. His thoughts and words are always pure. And above all, he is the beloved devotee of Lord Rama (raghupatpriyabhaktam).

The most admirable virtue of Sri Hanuman is his humility. Just as the wind remains with us twenty-four hours of the day, serving all beings without any desire for recognition and appreciation, Sri Hanuman served all without a trace of pride in his heart. He imbibed this great and noble virtue from his father, Vayu Devata.

Sri Hanuman crossed the boundless ocean, entered Lanka – Ravana’s impregnable, well-guarded stronghold – found Mother Sita, killed many demons and left after burning down the whole city of Lanka. Thus, he served Lord Rama in numerous ways. SantTulsidas declares that his exploits defy description and cannot be expressed even with a thousand tongues: natha pavanasuta kinhi jo karani, sahasahumukhana jai so barani.

Lord Rama, Himself, overwhelmed by Sri Hanuman’s service was filled with extreme love and gratitude for him. When the Lord expressed His feelings and praised him, Sri Hanuman, like a true devotee, fell at the feet of the Lord and with tears in his eyes disclaimed any recognition for his valorous feats giving all the credit to the Lord alone – so saba tava pratapa raghurai, natha na kachu mori prabhutai, . He declared that nothing was unattainable or impossible for a person on whom the Lord showered His Grace: ta kahu prabhu kachu agama nahi ja para tumha anukula.

In the Ramayana we see that Sri Hanuman always has the name of the Lord on his lips and His image enshrined in his heart. It is this single-pointed devotion to the Lord that enabled him to overcome insurmountable obstacles and perform unimaginable feats, such as carrying an entire mountain and singlehandedly entering and burning down a well-fortified Lanka. What a noble an inspiring ideal of service coupled with utmost humility! It is no wonder that Sri Hanuman is considered the favourite devotee of Lord Rama. When one has supreme and true love for the Lord, He too embraces such a devotee in a thousand ways.

Sri Hanuman is dearly loved by Lord Rama. Not only is he is an exemplary devotee, dedicating his entire being in the Lord’s service, but he also leads others to his Master so that, they too, may become devotees and be blessed by the Lord.

May we all come to recognise Lord Rama as our true Master and serve Him with the attitude of his great devotee, Sri Hanuman. May we ever revel in singing the holy name of the Lord – Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama!

Report of 2016 Chinmaya Mission Niagara’s CORD Fundraiser and Family Retreat

During the weekend of March 18th, Chinmaya Mission Niagara held it’s 3rd
annual family retreat and CORD fundraiser in Grand Bend, Ontario. Families from
United States and Canada came to engage in discourse and discussion about the
importance of sacrifice and service in our daily lives. Children were split into three
groups and enjoyed learning from Devji, Ginaji and Sachinji, while adults
and CHYKs studied the first half of Sadhana Panchakam with Vivekji. To
help us understand the text, each teaching was paired with a tangible practice to
take home, allowing attendees to connect these messages to their lives. The
Vivekji, Devji, Ginaji and Sachinji showed us that through the sacrifice that comes with diligently practicing sadhana and the happiness that comes with service, one develops the sincerity needed to be truly joyous in life.

In addition, the weekend was filled with fun activities like a photograph
scavenger hunt, soccer, and an open-mic night where the Balavihar students
demonstrated what they had learned from their classes in short skits; other
attendees, also, shared their talents, filling the night with music, laughter and joy.
Family retreats like this provide a very special opportunity to take a break from
daily life and learn about how to grow individually and as a family.

In keeping with the tradition of the last three retreats to raise funds to
support CORD, the Chinmaya Inspiration Yatris strived to raise $30,000 USD in
order to reach a total of $100,000 USD for CORD in honor of Gurudev’s birth
centenary. These funds will continue to support CORD Siruvani’s community work
and CORD Chennai’s flood relief. This year, with the love and generosity of the
Chinmaya Mission family, this goal was surpassed at the retreat with a fundraising
total of $40,000 USD. Consider joining us next year to experience the knowledge and the joy of these retreats with your family.

Sattva Dance Drama in Sydney

The Vision

Swami Chinmayananda’s life was a dance of pure Sattva (perfection). Every breath was, and still is, a teaching. Thus in celebration of His birth centenary, we dedicate to Him this beautiful dance-‐drama depiction of his life. He was the best, and gave us the best; Unto Him our best.
