Chinmaya Mission Chennai has launched ‘Speak Sanskrit through sports,’ to promote the language among children, youth and sports enthusiasts. Competitions to be held as part of the campaign may only give an initiation into Sanskrit, but the organizers hope it would inspire people to learn the language in a deeper way.

Conceptualised by Swami Mitrananda, ‘Speak Sanskrit through sports’ will be primarily an elocution competition which involves giving running commentary on cricket in Sanskrit. To help participants, a series of books have been conceptual ised. Open to all school children, the first round of the competition is slated to be held in the city on October 2.

The finals will take place on November 1 The event will be held in three rounds. In the opening round, participants will have to give cricket commentary in Sanskrit for eight minutes. From this round, 10% of the participants will be chosen for the next round, where they will be required to give commentary for 10 minutes.
