Love of God is untouched by sorrow; it is eternal, of the nature of bliss and so, to the seekers of liberation, it is most desirable.
Mystic Mahatma
Anecdote narrated by Sri Ganga Prasad, who in his childhood, was fortunate enough to know and interact with Swami Tapovanam:
Once, when I had gone to meet Swamiji with my mother and sisters, Swamiji asked one of the ashram inmates to bring a basket of oranges that had been gifted to him. He gave fruits to each one of us and then asked my sister, “How many people are there down below?” He started counting on his fingers along with her – one, two, three … There were some 5-6 people there. She held up the edge of her frock and he put seven oranges in it. She went down, but in a little while, we heard her screaming. A group of monkeys had surrounded her.
All of us rushed out, but Swamiji, being a fast walker, reached there first. He saw that the monkeys had taken the oranges and some had even climbed up the tree. Swamiji simply called out, “Ram! Ram!” and signalled them to come down. Most of the monkeys came down like obedient students. Swamiji said, “Rakko rakko,” and gestured to them to put the fruits down. He spoke Hindi with a Malayali accent, so ‘rakho’ in Hindi sounded like ‘rakko’! Anyway, the natives of that land (the monkeys) silently kept the oranges where he had indicated. Then Swamiji said, “Peechay, peechay,” meaning “Move back.” My sister was still crying. Swamiji instructed someone to take care of her and escort her. Then he had the entire basket of oranges brought and kept there for the monkeys. They came in a very orderly manner, picked up one orange each and went back up the tree.

How do I become a member of Chinmaya Mission?
In the words of Swami Chinmayananda: “Members of Chinmaya Mission are not subscription payers, or those who run after the Swami, or even those who fall hundred times at his feet. God is all-pervading and the Mission’s hope is to make our generation more conscious of the God-principle. Thus, all our friends who are sincerely practicing self-purification and mental purification are faithful Mission members, more than those who pay a donation or wear a badge on their chest. So long as you are practicing — not outwardly only, but mainly inwardly — you are a dearer member of the Chinmaya family than anybody else.”
What practises does a Chinmaya Mission member have to follow?
All that a Chinmaya Mission member needs to follow is the principle of ‘being good and doing good’. The core spirit in Chinmaya Mission is jnana (knowledge) – where individuals are encouraged to understand one’s Self. There is no rigid scheme of practices that a member needs to follow. Individuals may choose their path and make self-effort to progress at their own pace.
Spirituality is for one’s old age/ a post-retirement pastime – why should I get involved now?
To lead a life of fulfillment, joy and dynamic action – one needs the foundation of values and clarity in thought. The sooner these are gained – the earlier is one able to comprehend and apply them in one’s life. Thus, the need to start as early as possible.
In Swami Chinmayananda’s own words, “The seed of spiritual values should be sown in their young hearts, and the condition should be made favorable for its sprouting and steady growth by the exercise of proper control and discipline. Cared for with warmth of love and affection, such a tree shall blossom forth flowers of brotherhood, universal love, peace, bliss, beauty, and perfection.”
