RESTRAINT OF MIND WINS ALL

Progress and success in life
need a disciplined and obedient mind …
a mastery gained by preparing the mind in stages.

Example: to study calculus one must first know algebra.

WHY DISCIPLINE THE MIND?

Because…

The mind acts prompted by thoughts.
Thoughts are triggered by objects or emotions.
The strong forceful mind then propels us …
to act, think, brood, or worry over these thoughts.

From outside the mind is tempted
by the senses chasing objects and people …
From inside by desires and memories

THUS embattled, the mind becomes agitated … distracted.

IF WE:
Succumb to the distraction … mind gains control.

IF WE:
Refuse to yield to the distraction … we stay in control.
This is SELF-RESTRAINT….Damah in Vedanta
The ability to not let the senses
feed the mind with more perceptions.

Senses chase sense objects … It is their nature.

They do not discriminate between good and pleasant.
They feed the mind with perceptions … causing joy and sorrow
Which … agitates the mind … resulting in reduced concentration.
BUT… Even if the mind is agitated …
it is possible to control…
the senses…speech…thoughts…action.

Example:
When angry…
restrain from speaking harsh words.

Restraint is achieved through
discipline and healthy habits.

Control of the senses…restrains the mind’s responses.
If senses do not graze…mind does not desire.
No desire…no agitation.

Hence better concentration … progress on the path.

Inauguration of Chinmaya Independent Pre-University College at Chokkahalli, Kolar.

The Chinmaya Independent Pre-University College constructed in Chokkahalli Chinmaya Sandeepany Ashrama complex in Kolar District was formally inaugurated on 5th September, 2017 by Sri M R Jayaram, chairman of the prestigious Gokula Education Foundation and Chancellor of M S Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences in the divine presence of Pujya Swami Brahmananda. Sri Jayaram remembered the contribution of Pujya Gurudev in inculcating positive values in society declaring that He belonged to the Dasa Parampara spreading the message of the Bhagavad Geeta through daily spiritual discourses all over the globe.

Sri B R Prabhakara, trustee of Karnataka Chinmaya Seva Trust warned that right education is very essential in this competitive modern world where tremendous information of all types is available at the tips of fingers. He remembered with pride that Ms Nandini who topped the 2017 IAS examinations is a student of both Chinmaya Vidyalaya and M S Ramaiah Institution.

Pujya Swami Brahmananda in his Aashirvachanam echoed Sri Jayaram’s views that man is forgetting the all compassionate Lord who has provided everything that we need for our comfortable living. Along with academic education one needs to inculcate the positive moral values which alone can develop an integrated personality.

The function was very well attended by students and parents of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, College and general public with many Acharyas of Karnataka gracing the occasion.

Gita Jnana Yajna by Pujya Swami Brahmananda

Pujya Swami Brahmananda conducted a Gita Jnana Yajna from 10th September, 2017 to 17th September, 2017 on Bhagavad Geeta Chapter 5 at Sri Sai College for Women, Rajajinagar. The Yajna was inaugurated by Sri R Anand, Chairman of Sri Sai Mandir Trust.

Pujya Swamiji introduced the text as an Art of Living to be studied by everyone so that they can lead a tension free worriless life. He warned that happiness and sorrow are inseparable experiences in life. But amidst all the dualities it is absolutely necessary to maintain peace of mind as life is full of surprises and nothing happens as per human thinking. It is only the mature mind that stops questioning the happenings accepting situations as they appear without allowing the emotions to overpower. A sanyasi does not have either the doer and enjoyer attitude as he lives in the firm knowledge that he does nothing but is only an instrument through which the Lord performs all actions. Agitations of the ignorant mind create the world and bondage while a calm mind with right knowledge gets liberated seeing only the Lord everywhere. It is only knowledge that will help one to lead a sensible and meaningful life that will ultimately take him to a Jivanmukta status.

The Yajna was very well attended.

WHAT BINDS THE FAMILY?

In the family…we play various roles.
AT HOME a woman is…daughter…mother…wife…
daughter-in-law…sister-in-law…and so on.
In office…manager…worker…employer.
For a man too it is similar.

Every role comes with duties.
Diverse and distinct. …
Different in each relationship…towards…
mother…spouse…children…employer.
YET there is a commonality…

WHAT IS THE COMMON FACTOR IN THESE ROLES?

Remember by doing our duty we are really serving
our mother… spouse … in-laws … children.
The duties may be different…
but the spirit of service (seva) is common.

Through different roles and diverse duties
all we are doing is seva – serving others.
With this perception…there can be
NO COMPARTMENTALIZATION…
NO CONFLICT.

Ask yourself…“How did I perform the action?”
If the action was performed with an attitude of duty,
then the SPIRIT OF SEVA was inherent in that duty.
Everything is seva – only priorities change.

For instance if the child is sick…
the role of mother takes priority
over other roles (and their duties).
SHE SERVES THE CHILD…gets medical advice…
showers her love and facilitates a quick recovery.

SO even though there are different roles…
activities and duties…
when looked upon as seva … they become one.
There is no conflict of balance…
only priorities change.

POWER PACKED REMINDERS FROM THE GITA

Uplift ourselves by your own efforts. Never allow yourself to fall.
Don’t wait for circumstances or people to help you.
Put forth efforts yourself.

Human Life is meant for our inner unfoldment.
Don’t waste it.
Great heights are attained with self-effort,
as the Grace of the Lord manifests with our effort.

Do not condemn or demean yourself.
The Lord is always with you…in you.
Ultimately you will realise…He is your own Self.
Your own mind is your own enemy
and also your best friend.

An uncontrolled mind becomes your enemy
A well controlled mind is your friend…
helps you achieve both material prosperity and spiritual unfoldment.

Control the senses
Give up selfish desires
– they instigate wrong action
– destroy our knowledge and wisdom.

Do not suppress selfish desires….
Instead sublimate them by doing actions…
…as an offering to the Lord.
This will free you from likes and dislikes…
selfishness, frustrations and other negativities.
The Lord’s words: Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give in charity, whatever you practise as austerity, O Kaunteya, do it as an offering to Me.

Perform your duties and activities with this attitude you will be liberated from all bondages and become one with Me.

Chinmaya Family Retreat organized by Chinmaya Mission Phoenix (CMP)

CMP held its second family retreat from September 2nd – 4th in Payson, Arizona. It picked up from where last year’s retreat left off, exploring ‘Into The Wild’ with Sadhana Panchakam. The retreat was led by Vivekji from Niagara Falls and Brni Shubhaniji from New York. A total of 110 adults & kids signed up for the event.

The group met up early morning at Tonto Natural Bridge Park to explore the largest natural travertine bridge. After lunch everyone proceeded to the retreat site at Camp Tontozona. During check-in, each attendee was given a gift bag that included well thought of items needed for Satsang.

Vivekji led the adult group with early morning contemplation session. His Satsangs were filled with insightful messages and tactical points for everyone to practice in their daily life. For each of the 40 verses, Vivekji provided Reflection Adventure of the Day (RAD).

Shubhaniji kept the kids engaged with morning yogasanas. During Satsang she taught the kids how to live a great life by starting their day with inspiration, filling their day in doing the right things and ending their day with satisfaction. She led ‘make your Ganesha’ activity which was followed by ‘disco bhajans’.

In-between Satsangs, group activities included soccer, cricket & photo treasure hunt. Volunteers helped prepare sumptuous meals for the entire duration of the retreat. After dinner on first day, everyone sat by the fireplace and sang bhajans while for second night participated in star gazing.

For the closing ceremony everyone got blessings from the Vivekji and Shubhaniji and received a framed family picture with them. Lastly, everyone participated in Ganesha immersion at the nearby pond. As everyone packed up and drove home, all took back with them lot of fond memories, amazing spiritual experience and the joy of spending time with Chinmaya families. Also attaching few additional pictures from the Retreat:
