Who Does Anger Benefit?

We cannot ignore or escape…Anger

When we are angry

we become agitated:

 lose all inner peace and tranquility

 bring agitation to others

 increase the negativity around

So avoid thoughts and situations

that can cause anger.

Anger arises from:

 An expectation not fulfilled

 An ego hurt

While it is not possible to live without

expectation…

We can be free from the dependence on

other people for the fulfillment of desires.

How can we overcome anger?

First…be aware of it.

With awareness, in time anger will either

drop to a MINIMUM, or not rise at all.

NEXT become aware of the harm

caused by giving in to anger:

 The effects of anger are even worse

than physical death.

 The more we express anger the

more we suffer.

 The angry person dies continually to

his higher Self.

ASK: “What do I want out of life?”

“Do I gain anything from anger?”

“Anger is a losing proposition, so

why keep it?

The most precious wealth we have is

peace of mind.

To protect this peace…

…we have to remain determined

to not part easily with this wealth.

The key to VICTORY is…REMAIN ALERT

and WIN OVER the exact moment when

ANGER RISES!

Swamini Supriyanandaji’s visit to SINGAPORE

A voice that captivates, a smile that calms and embodied wisdom that emanates from every movement made and every thought expressed, Singapore was blessed to have Swamini Supriyananda over.
A hall full of Meditators, beginners and seasoned, enjoyed two blissful weekend mornings of quietude and introspection under the gentle guidance of Swaminiji.
“To be a witness” and “to be mindful”, loosely thrown about concepts in new age meditation and yoga practices – backed by the knowledge of Vedanta though and blessed with the Grace of a Being walking the path, seekers experienced first hand the fluid transformation of these theories into  actual practice.
Apart from these wonderfully attended and hugely  appreciated Meditation classes, in a whirlwind visit of just 4 days – Swaminiji conducted very productive workshops with our shishu vihaar, balavihar and youth groups – alongside holding engaging satsanghs which were open to all.
How fortunate are we that Gurudev’s grace and blessings continue to flow unobstructed towards us through our wonderful Swamins, Brahmacharins and Sevaks? May what we so bountifully receive become a fountainhead for what we in turn generously offer back to the world around us.

A Gurukula graduation at Chinmaya Prabha

000_Class of 2017_IMG_1936

Chinmaya Mission Houston Bala Vihar celebrated the Bala Vihar graduation for the class of 2017 on Saturday, May 20.  This milestone marked the culmination of the journey for twenty four students who have attended Bala Vihar regularly every Sunday and for as long as 14 years. Consistent with the scriptural education they received at Chinmaya Mission, students experienced a sendoff that was decorous, solemn, and emotional – much like the millennia old graduation ceremonies celebrated at Gurukula in ancient India.  Excitement about the next chapters in these students’ lives was tinged with sadness of their impending parting with their teachers – Bala Vihar, language, slokathon, orchestra, Gita chanting and choir – and the beloved Acaryas, Gaurang Nanavaty and Darshana Nanavaty.

After a sacred puja at  Saumyakasi Sivalaya, the students offered their prostrations at the feet of Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda’s pratima at Chinmaya Smrti before the Vedic commencement began. Then,  Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty inspired  the audience with the evergreen and relevant scriptural commands, instructions, and advice from the Taittiriya Upanisad, a Sanskrit Vedic text composed almost 3000 years ago. As was the case then and now, the parting advice at a significant juncture like graduation was firm as much as it was heartfelt.

As the graduating students left the shelter of their teachers and parents to embark on the next chapter of their lives as young adults, they were reminded that their new freedom was a double edged sword that had to be wielded responsibly. This choicest advice was the essence of the spiritual values that the students had imbibed every Sunday from teachers who were carefully trained in the comprehensive K-12 Bala Vihar curriculum mindfully designed for over thirty years by our dear Acarya Darshana Nanavaty.

Using relevant examples, Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty – reminded students of the three tenets for living an ethical life with integrity – speak the truth; stay within the bounds of dharma; and, given the constant buffeting of worldly temptations that seek to erode one’s values; reinforce convictions daily through the study of scriptures.”

Also, the students were reminded to not forget their responsibility toward supporting the institution where they were taught their values and also the spiritual institutions near where they lived – for making it to the top brings with it the responsibility to share the blessings with the generations that follow. Finally, the students were urged to honor their mother, father, and teachers – as they would God – as they served as God’s agents in protecting, providing, and guiding the students through childhood.

Following Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty’s  memorable discourse, students were individually honored for their diverse and impressive accomplishments. It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child, and as the day closed with a benediction and prayers, there was the sense of celebration and gratitude for the grace of Gurudev and the dedicated acaryas Gaurang Nanavaty and Darshana Nanavaty for forming and sustaining this scriptural village for the children of Houston families for over a generation. With that memorable ceremony, the  Bala Vihar Class of 2017 were poised to aim for a better standard of life along with the standard of living they were setting out to achieve in their educational journey ahead.

SHAKE OFF THE SHACKLES Drop like…dislike

Q How do I create my world?

A The outer world of objects

being the same for all…

different PREFERENCES for them

reside in each mind.

If I get something I like…I am happy.

CONVERSELY, if I get something I don’t like…

I am unhappy…sad…angry.

When desire arises…

I begin to work for what I like.

If I get it…I enjoy it and

am possessive about it.

The greater the attraction for

the pleasure, the stronger the attachment.

With things I don’t like…

dislike slowly turns to hatred.

…Like…dislike become

hate…love and then control the mind.

We experience happiness…unhappiness

not because of objects…situations…people

BUT because of the relationships

we create with them.

Like becomes desire

Dislike turns to anger…

…Then other negative emotions flow…

These emotions constantly change…

RESULT  It is difficult to:

…understand people.

…please either oneself or others.

FORTUNATELY…

Human beings have an innate capacity

to change…and herein lies their beauty.

TO EFFECT TRANSFORMATION…

Become aware of the likes and dislikes.

They can neither be wiped out completely

nor neutralised immediately…

SO convert them to become preferences.

SHAKE OFF THE SHACKLES

To now begin the journey

…for the HIGHER

…for the BETTER!

After lighting the inaugural lamp Swamiji began with taking the Lords Name and invoked Pujya Gurudevs’s Blessings. A short ice breaking session for the new comers and all were ready to roll. HELP CHILDREN FIND THEIR VOCATION

From BABIES we do not have any expectations.

We are happy to just watch them grow at their own pace.

BUT as they mature, things change.

Children …develop their own thoughts and feelings.

Parents often

…with increasing expectations and demands

…without due consideration for their needs

…impose on them THEIR opinions of what is correct

…Then problems surface!!

This does not mean that we should not guide the child.

HOWEVER, when we observe them

We will notice certain tendencies and aptitudes emerge.

We should then allow them to express their unique talents.

Acceptance means awareness of the child’s individuality…

…the readiness to encourage growth in the

…direction of his/her aptitude.

Expectation should be to see children succeed

in the field of their choice. It could be in:

 arts

 science

 some unheard of course.

Their success then…becomes a source of joy

for ALL…children and parents!!!

Expectation is misplaced if we want them to be

…different from their NATURAL SELF.

Once a boy asked me:

“My parents want me to be a professional,

…an engineer or a doctor.

But I want to be an artist, a poet or a writer.

I am told…I should obey my parents,

but my heart is not in it.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?”

My answer: “First be sure of your own aspirations.

Be CERTAIN you are not revolting or opposing their ideas

just because they are your parents.

When you are clear about your innate talent

…KNOW what you want to do, EXPRESS IT IN ACTION.

Your parents will see your aptitude and abilities

and give you the OPPORTUNITY to do what you really want.”

ON THE FLIP SIDE:

If parents oppose whatever their children want to do,

it will lead to NOTHING BUT CONFLICT.

BUT if you just allow their personality and talents to grow,

…their respect for you will also grow.

They will THEN either succeed in what they want to do

or know that it is not their true vocation.
