Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji’s visit to Sydney, April 2017

CHYKs around Australia eagerly assembled in Sydney, lamps in their hands, lighting the way for Pujya Swami Swaroopananda to begin his first CHYK camp as Global Head of Chinmaya Mission. The two-day camp, “Be Happy” was filled with joy, laughter and inspiration every step of the way. Swamiji led the youth through the ‘anatomy’ of happiness, our misconceptions about happiness, and irrefutable logic in the scriptures. Various other highlights included a hilarious laughter therapy session with Swami Shrikarananda (CM Sydney), mindfulness through dance, discussion groups and skits, and of course the lifelong friendships made.

The air was charged with eagerness as Swamiji then took a five-day series of free public talks on ‘Yogas of the Geeta’, based off the teachings in the Bhagavad Geeta. In this day and age, ‘yoga’ is one of the most popular words and fads, used liberally and casually, to mean a variety of exercises and positions to reach the goal of good health and relaxation. In Swamiji’s witty, humourous, and inspiring style, we came to learn answers to the following questions: What really is yoga? What is the state of yoga we all are striving to reach? What are the different paths to yoga and thus realisation of the Self? Swamiji systemically and logically taught us the various paths of yoga as expounded in the Bhagavad Geeta including karma-yoga, bhakti-yoga, jnana-yoga, ashtanga-yoga, and dhyana-yoga.

Swamiji’s one-week whirlwind trip to Sydney was all too short, and it was a bittersweet farewell. But we are all inspired and motivated to apply this timeless wisdom of Vedanta to our lives, which Swamiji has made so accessible, palatable and applicable to us.

Forgiveness Does Not Come Easy

                                                 Forgiveness
Q: We are taught to forgive and forget…
BUT even when we forgive someone outwardly…
…inside a feeling of grievance and hurt remains.

How can we get rid of that also?

                                    First…forgive outwardly
AND give up thoughts of revenge.
The inner uneasiness will then slowly recede.
The problem is…traces of anger linger inside…
                     BUT once we forgive externally
                                            the intellect slowly becomes
                                                  …SUBTLE
                                                       …PURE
                                                         …MATURE
                    …which leads to INNER FORGIVENESS.
                PERFECT forgiveness is the hallmark
                                      ……of great saints.
…As they see the oneness of all…
                        they FORGIVE SPONTANEOUSLY…
…Just as we forgive our finger if it pokes the eye.
No matter how many times it is repeated…
                                   …do we say…
“This is the last, very last time.
…Do it again, and I will cut you off!”
BECAUSE we know that the finger and the eye
                                       BOTH are ME!!!
I pervade the finger as well as the eye.
                                       IN THE SAME WAY
…when we see one’s own Self pervading
                                     everywhere
                                       the vision is different.
THERE is also ANOTHER way to forgive.

We can say, “I have forgiven you BUT
what you did was not right.”
                                     That’s ALL.
                      In the Ramayana, Lakshmana was
very angry with Kaikeyi because she sent
…his beloved SRI RAMA to the forest…
            BUT Ramachandraji told him not…
…to vent his anger on her.
On their return after FOURTEEN YEARS,
                Lakshmana still harboured some resentment
             but he obeyed his brother…
He did not express any angry sentiments
                                              and bowed to Kaikeyi.
So long as…we are not CARRIED away with
                      thoughts of revenge…it is fine.
The rest will come with time!!!

Chinmaya Mission Delhi Family Camp at Sidhabari

Camp Photo

On the evening of 26th March a cool, gentle breeze wafted down from the snowcapped Dauladhar range. A perfect setting for the over ninety participants gathered in the Satsang room at Tapovan Asharm. In her welcome address at the inauguration, the camp coordinator, Lekha Dhir, welcomed participants to the family camp led by Swami Prakarshananda. She urged them to make the most of their time in this scared and blessed space, the eternal abode of our beloved Gurudev.

From here on, for the next six days Swami Prakarshananda was in charge. He set the tone, by giving each delegate, including the youngest (nine year old), an ochre robe. Thus, initiating them to temporary sannyas during the camp; symbolically to live the disciplined life of a sannyasi.

The morningsbegan with chanting, followed by a calming meditation session. To maintain this innertranquility Swamiji prescribed a dose of maunam(silence)through breakfast, till the next session -the study of Manah Shodanam. Swamiji succinctly explained the problems of the mind and pointed tothe means to overcome them. During the talks, Swamiji evoked in the hearts of the participants a desire to offer gratitude at the feet of the Guru and the Paduka Puja that followed left many emotional and moist eyes. Such was the love and devotion they experienced. It was then lunch and a short, welcome siesta break!

The refreshed campers regrouped for Shiv Parvathi Vivaha Prasang by the Upacharya Mrs. Prarthna Saran. Prarthnaji captivated listeners with her command and in depth knowledge of the text. She brought alive every word of the chaupai and would surely have made Pujya Gurudev proud of His student! It was not all work and no play. Come 5pm Swamiji was ready for some exercise, every evening to a different destination – awalk in the woods, visit to CORD, Kapil Muni Guha. The aarti at the Samadhi and temple were never missed.

Exhausted physically, but mentally ready, it was relaxing time – with bhajans, story-telling and informal satsang till the dinner gong sounded. Post dinner, groups could be seen in animated conversation, meditative mode, star gazingor just looking at thetwinkling lights on the mountain side. Six days whizzed past. It was time to gives thanks and bid goodbye hoping to meet again for another such elevating experience.

Children – Are They Yours? by Swami Tejomayananda

Children – Are They Yours?

While raising children it is important to remember 

Parents only provide material for the physical body.

I belong to GOD…
…and so also…does everyone else.

Each one enters this world to fulfil:
 …a destiny
 …a purpose
 …a goal
It just so happens they are together as a family…

When travelling by plane…
the co-passengers do not know each other.

They share but one common factor…
their desire to travel on the same day
…by the same flight.

Brought together by a common karma…
…their reasons for travel could be as varied as:
 a vacation
 a marriage
 a funeral
 a meeting

Similarly, a common karma brings a family together.
The members meet…
…spend time together
…share the good and the bad.
Then…get off at different places
and go their SEPERATE ways.

So we need to rethink and…
Remove the ‘I-ness’ and ‘my-ness’ from life…
…my child…my father…my mother…my friend.

Khalil Gibran, in his book The Prophet, says
“Children come through you, they don’t belong to you”.

The role of a parent is to provide for the child:
…a conducive environment for its development
to allow it to grow to its FULL POTENTIAL.

The world in its totality plays a major role
…in the life of the child.

The Lord has entrusted to parents a given child.
And placed in each one the potential power of LIFE.

So devoid of fear and possessiveness
ENJOY the process of creation…watch your child grow!

THE RESULTS ARE NOT IN YOUR HANDS ALONE.
