Tips for Happy Living

Infinite Happiness – Myth or Reality? A question that has surfaced in all of us, time and again…. Were we finally going to get an answer? The banners and the whatsapp messages staring at us said so…. there was only one way to know. We had to be right where the action was planned! And thus, on the evening of 4th February, 2017, the Community Hall of Yash Paradise Housing Society in Airoli saw a 100-odd gathering waiting for the winsome, young and dynamic Br. Ved Chaitanya ji of Chinmaya Mission Navi Mumbai, to address them.

What followed was an hour and more of pointers to the path towards Happiness. If questions could be answered by more questions, Vedji did just that! He made us think by asking to reflect aloud on

  • Do we have a choice to live life as we want to?
  • For believers in destiny, what if God has written in your destiny, “You may do as you wish!”?
  • How do we evaluate the degree of our happiness?

As the crowd started offering varied replies, Vedji added some clarity to these by stressing that whether we succeeded or failed in any endeavour, we should be consistent while attributing it to our efforts or to destiny. He also said that just like we need to eat when hungry or take medicines when ill (no one else can do that on our behalf), so also the onus of living our life best rests on us. Vedji then took us on mathematical route to happiness by giving a formula for that!

Happiness = Number of desires fulfilled/Total number of desires entertained.

This made it pretty obvious that the only way we could hope for infinite happiness was to reduce the denominator to zero!

In fact, the Sutra goes like this: Praptasya upekshaayam, Apraptasya Apekshaayam, Dukkhasya Suraksha! That is, when we ignore what we have, and desire what we don’t, Sorrow is ensured! So. the tip for Happy Living is to appreciate what we already have. Vedji suggested that we list all that we have and read it daily, which would indeed give happiness!

By now, the audience was hanging onto every word…and the tips flowed on…

“Don’t work without resting, don’t rest without working!”

“Don’t act without thinking, don’t think without acting!”

“Change the things that you can, accept the things that you can’t…and move ahead!”

“Clearly distinguish between needs and desires, fulfill only the former!”

“Thoughtful Life alone is Happiness, Thoughtless life is Sorrow!”

“Selfish desires bring sorrow, Selfless desire brings progress!”

And finally, of course, the Vedantin’s declaration, “Knowledge alone can bring Happiness!”

The audience was left longing for more. The talk was interspersed with stories, pertinent examples and Vedji’s trademark humour! But like all good things, this too had to pass! The time was up and Vedji made his way to the children waiting in another hall upstairs. After a Balvihar session, they were given Gurudev’s coins to treasure, a fitting end to a happy evening.

Gurudev had yet again reached the hearts and awakened the minds of the masses, the Chinmaya Mission way…

Mantra to Excel

Be clear about the GOAL of every action.

Most are vague or confused about this…

….have given little thought to it or have superficial GOALS.

A young  boy was asked why he went to college.

He said, “Without a degree no girl will marry me!”

Another was asked why he got married.

He replied, “I am not sure. One day I suddenly found myself married!”

After the event we search for the purpose.

For life to be successful and joyful,

…we must have an inspiring and successful goal.

The immediate goal should be geared to something

…MORE LASTING …more permanent.

Short term needs must lead to…

…the fulfillment of long term GOALS.

EXAMPLE…

Immediate Goal

A student studies well to join a medical school.

Long Term Goal…

In order to serve humanity.

Those whose immediate goal of having FUN, becomes their only long term and ultimate goal

THEIR PLEASURES end in PRESSURES…

Blood pressure

Family pressure

Economic pressure

Life only taken as a permit for licentious living  Or pleasure seeking

WITHOUT family or social responsibility Cannot be happy or fulfilling.

ONLY WHEN geared to something Inspiring and permanent, Will it bring…

  • Stability
  • Peace
  • Growth
  • Happiness

We can work hard to achieve the immediate goals of:

  • Material Prosperity
  • Comfort
  • Name, Fame or Power

HOWEVER, the purpose of wealth should not be merely for

Your own PLEASURE AND PROSPERITY.

It should be used TO SERVE OTHERS in the capacity possible.

Do not ONLY think how much your profession can benefit you

But think how:

You can contribute to the profession

You can serve others through your profession

A still HIGHER attitude is

make YOUR WORK A WORSHIP OF GOD

Swami Swaroopananda’s Gyana Yagna in Delhi, February 13-18 2017

THE INAUGURATION : February 13, 2017

Adorned with fairy lights the Delhi Center looked festive and bright, in readiness for a momentous event; the first gyana yagna by Swami Swaroopananda, post his being anointed Global Head of Chinmaya Mission. Swamiji has been to Delhi on many an occasion and is no stranger to the many that eagerly awaited him. In addition to the familiar faces there were many new ones in the hall.

Swamiji along with other Acharyas of the Mission was greeted with the traditional purna kumbha. Escorted by Swami Prakarshananda he lit the inaugural lamp, to symbolically remove the dark shadow of ignorance from the mind. The spotlights then turned to Aishna Sharma, who added a melodious touch. She petitioned the Lord to bless the yagna through a soulful, mindful and meaningful invocation.

Days of Bliss

In her welcome address, Smt. Prarthna Saran, President Chinmaya Mission Delhi prophesised that we were looking forward to six days of Bliss!! That is just what it was. Swami Swaroopananda was like a wizard with a magic wand – every morning and evening he cast a spell on the listeners and kept them mesmerized. For the duration of the talks, every morning and evening there was magic in the air – problems, worries, trials and tribulations came to rest.

Every evening Swamiji unraveled with dexterity the complexities of the melodious sutras of Upadesh Sara. Similarly through the lyrical notes of the pauris of the Guru Granth Sahib he shared each morning the methods and means for effective meditation.

Over the six days Swamiji coaxed the mind to delve into deep enquiry, essential to gain infinite freedom. With simple anecdotes and humour he pointed out that if bondage was our true nature, then we would never taste freedom. Bondage is a delusion born out of ignorance, which when removed reveals our true nature. The spiritual practices (sadhanas), the starting point for each seeker may be different but their aim is to achieve an agitation-free, single-pointed and contemplative mind. Such a mind abides in the core and attains the goal.

During the yagna, on 15th February, we celebrated a very special occasion – Swamiji’s birthday. In his presence, Swami Prakarshananda performed a mid-morning Paduka Puja. The celebrations concluded with a aesthetically put together slide show – a walk through Swamiji’s life as a seeker…from white, to yellow…culminating in orange.

The success of every yagna depends on the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of the volunteers. Under the leadership of Swami Prakarshananda and the meticulous directions of Prema Vishwanath, the team functioned and performed to perfection. The result of which was palpably evident in the happy faces that filled the halls in the morning and evening.

The well-worded and succinct announcements directed seekers to the books and CDs. The sevaks behind the counters, eager to serve made sure that the requests of our guests were fully met.

In the short windows at their disposal, before and after the talks, the book and CD stalls did brisk business.

Other than the talks both morning and evening, Swamiji had a full programme. Apart from being available to devotees, he very graciously blessed all those who offered bhikshas…most of which were at the Centre.

The programme ended with a comprehensive vote of thanks by the Secretary. She took care to thank all those that made the yagna possible…Swami Swaroopananda, Swami Prakarshananda, the volunteers, the CCWU staff and of course…most important the audience.

In his concluding remarks Swamiji confessed that though all audiences are inspiring there was something special about the Delhi audience and he was always delighted to share this knowledge with them. And so we can block off the dates for next year on our calendar…13th to 18th February. Swamiji will be in Delhi to offer more of the ancient knowledge and wisdom he so obviously revels in!

Why Unhappiness ?

Q: God is love and happiness. If God is everywhere then why is there unhappiness in the world?

Air is everywhere, yet asthma patients gasp for air. Some are even known to die without air. The trouble is with the person not with the air.

Sunlight is everywhere, yet the blind person does not see. Even when we feel heat of the sun, its light cannot be seen.

Similarly, even though God is happiness and everywhere, because of spiritual ignorance we do not see that.

Whatever glimpses of joy we experience are due to His all pervading presence alone.

BUT because of the veil of ignorance, man is deluded and becomes unhappy.

We say…God is everywhere

But do we believe this…

We are not convinced…these are someone else’s words.

The slightest pain or sorrow shakes us to the core…

WE plead…GOD WHY ME?

Have faith in:

  • your convictions…
  • the Scriptures…
  • God…

Then effortlessly see him everywhere

…in the family

…in the workplace

…in the garden

…in the slums

…in sadness

…in gladness

Know for certain that whatever happens is for

the best

…that is the path to God

therein lies eternal happiness.

Is there Life After Death ?

The easiest answer is: Wait till death to find out!

The question that requires a response is: AFTER WHOSE DEATH AND WHOSE LIFE?

It is common knowledge that the physical body perishes after death.

What happens to the other entity…known as jiva or soul?

The jiva is the mind and intellect…the manifestation of CONSCIOUSNESS…that occupies the body and deals with the world.

On the journey of the soul after the death of the body, the Bhagavad Gita says

just as the breeze carries the fragrance from the flower, the jiva is carried from the body.”

A person with faith in the scriptures believes……the jiva will take up another body.

He sees life as a journey…………………which ends when the jiva discovers his true nature.

Others will need logic to convince them.

Logic is based on the laws of cause and effect, which conclusively conclude…there can be no effect without a cause.

So logically to explain birth and the differences we see around us

…some points arise…

  1. We have to accept the existence of something other than the physical body, which takes up different bodies.
  2. The karmas and last thought of the jiva determines…the future path and body.

As you think so you become.

But behind these ever-changing phenomena, there is something changeless and immutable……The Reality referred to as Brahman.

There is no more birth or death for the individual soul that has realized the true Self.

The jiva that remains ignorant, is then pushed by desire,

To be reborn in the appropriate field, in which to fulfill that desire.

Therefore…

                                 purify the mind,

                                cultivate good karmas,

                                befriend Dharma

…and…GAIN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SELF.

Realise and abide in it. THEN everything is automatically taken care of.

In this journey, our best friend is the Lord alone.

In the Gita Sri Krishna says, “I am your friend and always with you!!!”
