The Art of Listening

The Art of Listening

PROVIDED WE LISTEN PROPERLY…
listening (sravana) is a means of
gaining knowledge – right knowledge that is
free from all doubts and errors.
Most problems in relationships arise
because we do not actually listen to the other.
We prefer to talk rather than listen
and we constantly interrupt.
The Bhagavad Gita teaches
the art of listening…
Sri Krishna urges Arjuna:
“Listen to Me with all your love…
with your mind totally focused on Me
ready to do whatever is required
to gain this Knowledge.
Then alone will you understand My teaching
completely and correctly without any doubts.”
The essential requirements of a
good listener are…three:
 LOVE
 FOCUS
 ACTION
LOVE…
True listening becomes possible…
when we love something or someone…
there is an eagerness to know about them.
FOCUS….
We lack a goal and the necessary focus on it.
We love many things and beings…
but do not consider them as…
the primary and only purpose of life.
ACTION….
We also have to do
WHATEVER is required
to gain the knowledge
to be clear about our aims and goals in life.
IN CONCLUSION…it is important:
 to keep focused…
 have an open mind…
 listen attentively…
TO WHAT THE OTHER PERSON IS SAYING.

One-Two Ka Four-Four Two Ka One Workshop by Chinmaya Setukari Ahmedabad

Under the guidance of Br. Atharvana Chaitanya, Chinmaya Setukaris of Ahmedabad organized a half day movie workshop with an interesting title of “One-Two Ka Four, Four Two Ka One” on 26th November 2017. The workshop was based on a Hindi feature film “Manjhi” and focused on one’s four personality layers namely – Physical, Emotional, Intellectual and Spiritual. The seemingly mundane act of watching a movie turned out to be an intense thought-provoking Sadhana for the participants. Enjoying the fun time together, setukaris reflected on the subtle nexus among these four personality layers and learnt different techniques of integrating them in every transaction with the world and thereby leading a happy and successful life through.

The Song Celestial Gyana Yagna at Chinmaya mission Delhi

“He is a living legend”, observed Smt. Prarthna Saran, president of Chinmaya Mission, New Delhi, while inaugurating H.H. Swami Brahmananda’s seven-day discourses on “The Song Celestial” on 29 October at Chinmaya Mission. Swamiji’s visit to Delhi, made possible due to the endearing persistence of Swamini Gurupriyananda and Swami Prakarshananda, was a divine outpouring of knowledge and devotion.

The text was Sri Ramana Maharshi’s invaluable Gita Saar, in which the Sage had selected 42 verses representing the very essence of the Bhagavad Gita. Commencing the talks with one or two of his famous, melodious bhajans, Swami Brahmananda explained the three terms, jiva, jagat and Ishwara. “Both jiva and jagat are creations of a disturbed mind,” he asserted. “Quieten the mind, go behind the intellect and you will be with Bhagavan!” Every evening’s discourse, delivered in a packed hall, was profound and reflective wherein Swamiji exhorted the audience, again and again, to see the unreal nature of the outer world; to withdraw within; to be aware of the six enemies of the mind; to approach a teacher, listen attentively and reflect on the teachings. “The Guru alone”, said Swamiji, “removes the jiva bhava of the seeker and introduces him to
him Self.”

Describing the lectures, a regular attendee said, “They were totally blissful.” Swamiji interspersed the talks with shlokas from the Upanishads, Bhaja Govindam, and other scriptures and took the listeners to the heights of meditation with his concise, thought-provoking and penetrating words: “Bondage is in your own mind and intellect. If you go and question bondage, you will realize you were never bound!” Indeed, as an absorbed, elderly devotee stated, “For me, it was not a transference of knowledge; it was a transmission of vision.”

Interview with Deepak Chopra and our BV Alum, Anoop Kumar

What is health? What is disease? What is love? What am I?  What is the nature of this world?

I never learned the answers to these questions in medical school or management school. Instead, I had to look to my roots in Advaita Vedanta to investigate and discover the answers. That education began thirty years ago for me with Chinmaya Mission, where I spent many days of the week in Bala Vihar, Yuva Kendra, and adult Vedanta classes. (My parents thought I wasn’t listening. 😉)

Churning these questions and measuring the answers against my own experience ultimately yielded a new vision of life, in which the objective sciences I learned are contextualized within the fluctuations of the mind and stabilized in the still depths of the ocean of consciousness.

Seeing the state of healthcare in this country, I couldn’t keep my thoughts to myself. They have been elaborated upon in my book, Michelangelo’s Medicine, which details how we can see the human body anew as not merely a physical structure, but an integrated activity of thought, emotion, intuition, energy, and ultimately consciousness itself. This new vision is the basis for true healthcare.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Deepak Chopra, I discussed the book’s implications for healthcare and beyond. The conversation can be viewed here. I offer all these with love and gratitude at the feet of my many teachers.

Anoop Kumar, MD, attended Bala Vihar and Yuva Kendra for many years at CMWRC and also trained in Carnatic vocal music.   He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and holds a Master’s degree in Management. His passion is exploring and translating the intersection of self-awareness, science, and well-being in daily life. Visit Anoop at anoopkumar.com.

Swamini Supriyananda’s visit to CM, Singapore

Our beloved Gurudev Pujya Swami Chinmayananda’smotto -“Maximum happiness to maximum people for maximum time” is what Singapore witnessed as a living breathing reality over one of the most memorable weekends of Swamini Supriyanandaji’s visit here in the Tropics!

From enlightening women about their true Divine potential in Her houseful talk, Goddess Diaries – to helping new and advanced Meditators sink deeply into present awareness with some soulful guided meditations through a morning dedicated to Mindfreeness – Swaminiji reached out to touch people of all walks in life, all on a quest for Truth albeit each adapting very different ways towards it.

Swamini Supriyanandaji had not a moment to spare as in between these two massive events organised by Chinmaya Seva Centre, Singapore – she spent all of Her time conducting in-house workshops for Shishu Vihaar – aged 0 to 4, held confidence building and self improvement sessions for our Junior Chyks and Chyks and also made time to conduct a very interesting workshop on “The Art of Story Telling” for Balavihar sevikas.

Fulfilling and adhering to Gurudev’s prophecy and advice from ages ago, Swaminiji truly swept very new and unfamiliar masses of crowds off their feet. We quote Gurudev here

“When the fundamentals forming the foundation are to be kept sacredly the same, the only adjustment that is possible for the EXPANSION OF A SCIENCE OF LIFE, is to discover a more liberal means of application, and to annotate the same in the language of the conflict and struggle available in that period. To a large extent, an Interpreter of a philosophy will have to dance to the rhythm of the inundations and the direction of the current of thought and life in His age.”

We at Chinmaya Seva Centre extend our heartfelt gratitude to Swamini Supriyananda for Her loving presence, timeless wisdom and unbridled enthusiasm – and cannot wait to have Her back amongst us again!

Resilience Workshop at Chinmaya Ganapati by Vivekji

Resilience Workshop at Chinmaya Ganapati, Minneapolis-St. Paul: submitted by Prashant Nene I’m so stressed out! Take a chill pill … These are some of the phrases that are so common among our society now, that it seems ‘odd’ if one isn’t stressed in life. The norm today is to be constantly busy and with that, stress is a natural byproduct and many have a hard time coping with it. Chinmaya Mission Twin Cities had the opportunity to organize an event on “Developing Resilience in a Stressful World”. The all-day workshop saw an audience of 50 ranging from High school students to adults. Two unique speakers lead the audience down the path of knowledge and scientific research to develop resilience in today’s ever changing and competitive world.

Vivekji from Chinmaya Mission Niagara and Dr. Amit Sood from the Mayo Clinic presented their views on the subject from their own field of experiences.
Dr. Amit Sood, a Professor of Medicine from the Mayo Clinic provided his insights from the field of neuroscience of emotions and pain. Highlighting his scientific findings on the
functioning of the mind, the mind requires uplifting emotions and not irrational fears. Dr. Sood provided simple exercises of how one can be more mindful daily, which helps one to be steady during rough challenges, and have an appreciation for life as a whole.

Vivekji approached the discussion on a more philosophical level, diving deep into the very causes and sources of stress, while providing actionable solutions. If one is able to locate and remove the very causes of stress and do so while performing ones’ duties in the spirit of dedication towards the Higher, one develops the resilience towards anything that life throws at him. The audience was captured by a guided meditation session which allowed one to experience a stress-free world. Life always brings new challenges, some are easy while some are more difficult. It is how one faces those challenges that define who we are.
