Swami Swaroopanandaji’s trip to Melbourne 2017

DSC01868

Chinmaya Mission Melbourne had the wonderful opportunity to host our Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji twice in the months of March and May. From March 25th-29th, Pujya Swamiji went through the first part of Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita, the yoga of self-enquiry. Through day to day examples, Pujya Swamiji demonstrated the different standpoints of our three personalities and how when not aligned, cause absolute chaos! Pujya Swamiji emphasized repeatedly that it is through the process of self-enquiry that we are able to dissect and understand ourselves and in the process gain clarity. Listening to Pujya Swamiji expound on the very verses Lord Krishna discoursed with Arjuna was indeed a treat.

In the second leg of Pujya Swamiji’s trip to Melbourne, from May 2-7, 31 participants from all over Australia joined Pujya Swamiji at Candlebark Farm in Healesville to take part in the highly anticipated Make it Happen. It is the second time in Australia that Pujya Swamiji has conducted this camp. Set in the serene and lush backdrop of the Australian outback, Pujya Swamiji took the participants on an inward journey of self-discovery. The days were spent in Pujya Swamiji’s discourses, quiet reflection and carefully designed activities to test limits and push boundaries. We delved into the layers of our personalities to unmask and discover our life’s purpose. It is indeed a wonder how easily we slip on masks but how difficult it is to slip them off! Through his gentle guidance, we worked through self-doubt and limiting beliefs and came through with a new perspective on ourselves. As camp drew to a close, all of us felt a deeper appreciation for this timeless knowledge which Pujya Swamiji had made beautifully practical for us.

Pujya Swamiji spent Gurudev Jayanthi with us in Melbourne on the 8th of May. After Swami Aparokshanandaji conducted Gurudev’s paduka puja, Pujya Swamiji took us on a journey down memory lane as he narrated stories and incidents with Gurudev. The love Gurudev had for all his children shone through in Pujya Swamiji’s narration. We concluded that programme with a guided meditation on Gurudev and as Pujya Swamiji ended the meditation, you could see there was not a dry eye amongst the devotees!

May 10-12 saw the conclusion of Pujya Swamiji’s programme in Melbourne with morning satsangs. We contemplated the indicators of Brahman as prescribed in the verses of Vivekchudamani. Pujya Swamiji took us to the heights of reality in his explanation of “that Brahman thou art”. Over and over again the command came, “brahma tattvamasi bhavayatmani”.

We bow our heads in gratitude and eagerly look forward to Pujya Swamiji’s next visit.

Chinmaya Vanaprasth Sansthan Delhi Spiritual Retreat at Haridwar

unnamed

Chinmaya Vanaprastha Sansthan’s Spiritual Retreat At Haridwar CVS organized a spiritual retreat at Mohyal Ashram in the lap of Mother Ganga at Haridwar from 21 st to 27 th April 2017. Swami Prakarshananda graced as Chief Acharya. He was assisted by  Mithilesh Sharmaji. Fifty-eight vanaprasthis benefitted from this golden opportunity to listen to and reflect on scriptural knowledge in such an enriching environment.

The camp was inaugurated on 21 st with the lighting of the lamp by Swamiji. Addressing the participants, he said that entry into the vanaprastha ashram signals the fact that it is time to switch over from pravritti to nivritti, to reduce actions and maximize upasana. Swamiji took up the study of Chapter 6 of Shrimad Bhagawad Geeta which expounds dhyana yoga. Two classes daily were earmarked for this, besides one early morning class for the practice of meditation. Mithileshji took an afternoon class every day for the study of Navdha Bhakti prasang from the Tulsi Ramayana. This is a renowned section of the Ramcharitmanas in which, through the medium of Maata Shabari, Bhagawan Sri Rama expounds the nine progressive steps of devotion for our benefit.

The early morning session started with chanting of Shanti Mantras, then instructions on the technique of meditation and finally a guided meditation session. This included adopting a witness-like attitude towards the thoughts coming to mind and meditation on ‘A-U- M’. Swamiji explained all the aspects of meditation as taught by Lord Krishna to Arjuna. He emphasized that each one of us must be responsible for our own upliftment; no one else can do this for us. Our attention was drawn to the prominent role played by abhyasa (practice) and vairagya (dispassion) in restraining the turbulent and unyielding mind.

Swamiji lucidly explained the life style that a vanaprasthi should adopt. This included the aspects of aahar, vihar, vichar and achar. Swamiji also introduced the concept of ‘Prime Time’-the first three hours after one wakes up in the early hours of the morning. He emphasised that this precious time must be devoted to nama japa of the Lord. Also, to expedite lifting one’s mind from the gross level to a subtler level, he advised the chanting of Gayatri Mantra 108 times.

Mithileshji delightfully and elaborately explained the nine steps of bhakti revealed by Lord Rama. Swamiji surprised everyone by conducting a ‘Cultural Programme’ wherein he introduced interesting games, incorporating quizzes on spiritual and patriotic themes. This generated lot of interest among the participants. The penultimate day was reserved for sightseeing, which covered a visit to the main temples at Kankhal and then, on to Rishikesh. We first visited Swami Sivananda Ashram and paid obeisance at His Samadhi. Thereafter we crossed Ganges and participated in the uplifting Ganga Arti conducted by Parmarth Ashram at every sunset.

On the last day of our stay, we had a dip in holy Ganga at Har Ki Pauri. Thereafter it was time for valediction, where some of the participants spoke about their experience of the camp. They admired Swamiji’s method and style of conducting the camp and appreciated Shri Khurana’s meticulous planning of this elevating spiritual retreat. The general atmosphere in the Ashram was upbeat and the food served and other services rendered were appreciated by one and all.

On the 8th of May Chinmaya Mission Melbourne had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Gurudev Jayanthi in the presence of Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji. It was a real treat when Pujya Swamiji began narrating His experiences with Gurudev.

From describing Gurudev’s tall stature, His stately walk and deep and rich laughter, all devotees present were hanging onto every word. Pujya Swamiji painted the picture of Gurudev as He saw Him and we began to get glimpses of that giant of a man who surrounded everyone He met with pure love and acceptance. The evening satsang was then concluded with a guided meditation. As we closed our eyes, our minds quiet and hearts full, we could not help but feel blessed as our Pujya Swamiji led us to His Guru.

HOUSTON. In the “Cintan Dainandini,” Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda gives abeautiful example of the power of chanting – “The child may be in any part of the house;it need not know where the mother is; but the moment the child cries ‘ma ma’, themother appears and gathers the child to her bosom.” In the same way by repeatedlychanting the Bhagavad-Gita with a pure and innocent heart, like that of a child, theGuru’s grace and Sri Bhagavan Krishna’s blessings will be constantly present. In honor of Pujya Gurudev’s 101 st birthday (May 8), Chinmaya Mission Houston held itsannual Gita competition on May 6 th where over 115 children offered the best ofthemselves to the great Master who lived and spread the message of Gita every day of his glorious life.To watch young children chant verses from Chapter 14 – The Yoga of Gunas –and adolescent minds present their analysis of the chapter was both mesmerizing and transcendental. While reciting the Gita creates a positive vibration within the body and the environment around, it also teaches control and voice modulation which improves pronunciation as well as vocal musical skills. The regular chanting of the Gita also helps children with concentration, discipline, time management, responsibility, public speaking finesse, comprehension and deliberation. Just as sending our children to start school at kindergarten, similarly learning the Bhagavad-Gita at a very young age has numerous benefits, some of which can be seen immediately and some in the future. When the winners of the Gita Chanting event were celebrated the next day, Acarya Gaurang Nanavaty emphasized that Gita was for everyone and it was best learned when young to be applied in a lifetime. He appreciated the enthusiastic spirit of all children who participated.

Satsang by Pujya Swami Brahmananda

Pujya Swami Brahmananda conducted a Satsang in Chinmaya Mission centre, Hampinagar, Vijayanagar  on 2nd April, 2017 as a part of Ramananvami. It is our wrong identification with the body due to ignorance that causes all misery in life. Only when we transcend the BMI through puja, japa, bhajans, dhyana, etc experience of this supreme Truth and bliss is possible. The concept of birth, life and death is all our own mental projection and in reality is only an illusion. This concept needs to be clearly understood with the help of right knowledge to overcome the dualities in life and stand rooted in the firm conviction that the visible world is the manifest form of the Lord and the supreme Truth enlivening the universe is the unmanifest form of the same Lord which is nothing but “Nitya Shuddha Buddha Mukta Tatwa”.

Pujya Swami Brahmaji

Ramanavami was also celebrated in other centres through bhajans and devotional music.

Delhi seva day3

On 8 May 2017, Chinmaya Mission Delhi, in partnership with Anugraha Drishtidaan and I Care Eye Hospital Noida, organised a free eye-screening camp for the underprivileged community of the basti under the Safdarjung Flyover. Swami Prakarshananda inaugurated the camp with Pujya Gurudev’s aarti and joyfully interacted with adults and children present at the site. In four hours, 205 men and women availed of this service.

Delhi seva day1

Almost 180 were given free spectacles and medicines. Eight persons were diagnosed with cataract. Out of these seven will undergo the operation right away. It was such a fulfilling pleasure to see the smiles that accompanied clarity of vision. Side by side, a small Bal Vihar session was conducted. The little ones listened to inspiring stories, sang bhajans and enjoyed cool and refreshing sherbet.

Delhi seva day 2

In spite of the unrelenting heat of Delhi’s summer, the sevaks and sevikas served with cheerful dedication. On this most auspicious day they engaged in Narayana sewa as an offering to Pujya Gurudev – an offering to Narayana Himself. It was truly a Sewa Day on Gurudev’s birthday.

WHY POSTPOSE YOUR HAPPINESS – FIND IT NOW!

The Bhagawad Geeta categorises mankind into:

three personality types …

with three different visions.

The sattwic person perceives the oneness of things and beings

…heart is filled with love

…lives in bliss and freedom

The rajasic person constantly struggles

…sees differences around

…creates divisions of likes and dislikes

The tamasic person lives in bondage

…takes the part for the whole

…gets fanatically attached to one little thing.

The vast majority belongs to the second category

For them…happiness is based on the result of the action.

We want happiness now and forever…

BUT we live…think…say…“I will be happy IF…”

I pass the examination

I get that job

I get married

…and so on…

We DEFER our happiness to the future.

Always preparing to be happy  NEVER HAPPY!

THE CONTRADICTION:

I want happiness now but postpone it to the future.

RESULT

1. My happiness will be in the future.

2. The future is uncertain…my happiness is also uncertain.

So if my joy is in the action itself,

then my joy is in the present.

The result of action depends on many other factors.

To win an election…I make all the necessary arrangements

BUT whether I win or not, depends on the votes polled.

For a person obsessed with the results of ACTION

Life becomes an exercise in futility…

…a relentless struggle for HAPPINESS.
